Travelogue Part Une
Travelogue Part Une After a stressful week of essays after essays, assignments after assignments, I decided to take a break by traveling to Bath in Somerset, UK. I arrived in Bath bright and early around 10am. That means waking up at 5 am and walking to the Cambridge train station in sub-zero temperature, say -10 °C (okay, I know I live in Cambridge, Massachusetts so I can take the cold, but still!) Then I took a train to London at 6am and another train from London to Bath around 8am. The most adventurous part of it is probably the 5am walk to the station; it sounds a little torturous/scary but it was kinda worth it. When I saw people cleaning the streets and emptying garbage bins in the cold, when the sun wasnât even up yet, I felt really grateful. For everything. After having lived abroad for 7 years and visited many places, I thought I would get a little lazy and wouldnât make an effort to travel. But every time I managed to drag myself out of my super warm electric blanket (hooray to Mommy who made me bring it to England) and went somewhere new, I was reminded of why I love traveling so much. Was it the unusual calmness of the bustling city of Bath that you can only see in the morning? Was it the break-taking architecture of Bath Abbey? Or was it the company of my fabulous traveling buddies? I think itâs the whole package. The highlights of our trip must be the Roman Bath and the fashion museum. I got a little bit unreasonably excited when I was explained about the formation and chemistry of the hot springs that have been supplying water for the bath for thousands of years (my course 5 friends will be so proud!) But I decided to keep it cool because I was kinda surrounded by friends who are future bankers, economists and media specialists. The fashion museum was rather entertaining because we could try on panniers, which are undergarments worn in the 18th century that extend the width of the skirts beyond your widest imagination. Yes, I did feel like Marie Antoinette. Yes, I did tiptoe and try to walk really fast in the most graceful manner possible. And yes, I did stumble, only a little bit (I recovered pretty well) Another wonderful aspect of traveling is making new friends! In this trip, I met a wonderful and charming chocolatier from France. Thanks to my three French classes at MIT, I managed to have a decent conversation with him! He talked to me about his chocolate creations, his hometown and how he met Nicolas Cage here at the store. The whole nicolas-cage-was-here was obviously a joke (or IS IT?); but you know, French humor. And everything else was really interesting! He really liked our feisty group of girls so he decided to give us this little pink pig made out of marzipan as a little souvenir! Our day ended with a visit to Sally Lunnâs house where the famous Sally Lunn Bun was sold. Sally Lunn was a young French refugee who baked this rich round generous bread, light and delicious, a very popular delicacy in Georgian England. It was an awesome weekend getaway; I was a little sad to go back to Cambridge and face with the mountain of essays and applications. BUT FRET NOT, something really exciting happened yesterday! Drum rolls⦠I attended a talk by a professor from MIT, here in Cambridge!!! How awesome is that? Meet Professor Angelika Amon, an HHMI investigator, who currently works at David H. Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research. When I saw a poster pasted on the Department of pathologyâs notice board about her talk on aneuploidy, I just had to go. Firstly, I just learnt about aneuploidy in cancer in my lecture a few hours ago. Secondly, beaver love. Nuff said. It was a really cool talk, not only because it was right on the topic I was learning in class, but it really changes my perspective on posing the right questions in scientific enquiry. So aneuploidy is characterized by any deviation from an exact multiple of the haploid number of chromosomes (fewer or more). Itâs different from polyploidy, which describes the state of having more than 2 sets of chromosomes. In humans, aneuploidy is the leading cause of miscarriages and mental retardation. Interestingly, it is also a key characteristic of cancer. More than 90 percent of all solid human tumors are aneuploid!! I know both of these facts, but I havenât never questioned why aneuploidy, a condition that is so deleterious in fetus, causing proteotoxic and energy stress, actually leads to cell proliferation and cancer in adults? If we can figure out how the proliferative ability of aneuploid cells comes about, we will gain a much greater understanding of evolution of tumor. And, perhaps, if we exaggerate the adverse effects of aneuploidy, say by inducing further energy stress, to eliminate the aneuploid cells, we can find new treatments of tumor! How cool is that!! Needless to say, I was pretty excited by the end of the talk. During the reception afterwards, itâs even more inspiring to see Professor Amon talking to other researchers at Cambridgeâs Laboratory of Molecular Biology who are working in the same field. She got really excited about the findings shared by these researchers that she pulled out her laptop to discuss further about those results she gathered!! Man, I felt incredibly lucky to be able to meet such a passionate and talented individual!! Thanks everyone for such a fantastic week :) and thanks to my dear friend Thu Hang from Warwick University, who took all those beautiful pictures of our trip to Bath!

What Is Conflict in Literature
What makes a book or movie exciting? What makes you want to keep reading to find out what happens or stay until the end of the movie? Conflict. Yes, conflict. It is a necessary element of any story, driving the narrative forward and compelling the reader to stay up all night reading in hopes of some sort of closure. Most stories are written to have characters, a setting and a plot, but what sets apart a truly great story from the one that might not finish reading is conflict.à Basically we can define conflict as a struggle between opposing forces - two characters, a character and nature, or even an internal struggle - conflict provides a level of angst into a story that engages the reader and makes him or her invested in finding out what happens. So how do you best create conflict?à First, you need to understand the different types of conflict, which can essentially be broken down into two categories: internal and external conflict. An internal conflict tends to be one in which the main character struggles with himself, such as a decision he needs to make or a weakness he has to overcome. An external conflict is one in which the character faces a challenge with an external force, like another character, an act of nature, or even society.à From there, we can break down conflict into seven different examples (though some say there are only four at most). Most stories focus on one particular conflict, but its also possible that a story can contain more than one.à The most common kinds of conflict are: Man versus Self (internal)Man versus Nature (external)Man versus Man (external)Man versus Society (external) A further breakdown would include: Man versus Technologyà (external)Man versus God or Fateà (external)Man versus Supernaturalà (external) Man versus Selfà This type of conflictà occurs when a character struggles with an internal issue. The conflict can be an identity crisis, mental disorder, moral dilemma, or simply choosing a path in life. Examples of man versus self can be found in the novel, Requiem for a Dream, which discusses the internal struggles with addition. Man versus Man When you haveà both a protagonist (good guy) and antagonist (bad guy) at odds, you have the man versus man conflict. Which character is which may not always be evident, but in this version of the conflict, there are two people, or groups of people, that have goals or intentions that conflict with each other. The resolution comes when one overcomes the obstacle created by the other.à In the book Alices Adventures in Wonderland, written by Lewis Carroll, our protagonist, Alice, is faced with numerous other characters that she must face off with as part of her journey.à Man versus Nature Natural disasters, weather, animals, and even just the earth itself can create this type of conflict for a character. The Revenant is a good example of this conflict. Although revenge, a more man versus man type of conflict, is a driving force, the majority of the narrative centers around Hugh Glassââ¬â¢s journey across hundreds of miles after being attack by a bear and enduring extreme conditions.à Man versus Society This is the sort of conflict you see in books that have a character at odds against the culture or government in which they live. Books likeà The Hunger Games demonstrate the way a character is presented with the problem of accepting or enduring what is considered a norm of that society but in conflict with the protagonistââ¬â¢s moral values.à Man versus Technology When a character is confronted with the consequences of the machines and/or artificial intelligence created by man, you have the man versus technology conflict. This is a common element used in science fiction writing. Isaac Asimovââ¬â¢s I, Robotà is a classic example of this, with robots and artificial intelligence surpassing the control of man.à Man versus God or Fate This type of conflict can be a bit more difficult to differentiate from man versus society or man, but it is usually dependent upon an outside force directing the path of a character. In the Harry Potter series, Harryââ¬â¢s destiny has been foretold by a prophecy. He spends his adolescence struggling to come to terms with the responsibility thrust upon him from infancy.à Man versus Supernatural One can describe this as the conflict between a character and some unnatural force or being. The Last Days of Jack Sparks demonstrates not only the struggle with an actual supernatural being, but the struggle man has with knowing what to believe about it.à Combinations of Conflict Some stories will combine several types of conflict to create an even more intriguing journey. We see examples of woman versus self, woman versus nature, and woman versus other people in the book, Wild by Cheryl Strayed. After dealing with tragedy in her life, including the death of her mother and a failed marriage, she embarks on a solo journey to hike more than a thousand miles along the Pacific Crest Trail. Cheryl must deal with her own internal struggles but is also faced with a number of external struggles throughout her journey, ranging from weather, wild animals, and even people she encounters along the way. Hamas Victory Free Essays
The international community should continue with its restrictive policies towards Hamas even after it has recorded huge victories in the Palestinianââ¬â¢s election. Hamas has in the past declared its open hostility principle towards Israel its interests especially in the Middle East. Unless it openly denounces such ideas, it should continue to be treated as a terrorist group. We will write a custom essay sample on Hamas Victory or any similar topic only for you Order Now Hamas is also referred to as the Islamic Resistance Movement. It practices both party politics and militarism. It is its later mission that has seen its branding as a terrorist organization by nations such as United States, Australia, Canada, United Kingdom and Israel amongst others. The European Union has also blacklisted it for exhibiting terrorist tendencies. It is currently having its moment of glory in Palestine having recorded surprise wins in the parliamentary elections that astounded many especially across the western world (Levitt, Matthew, 2006). The history of Hamas dates back to 1987. Its formation is known to have been inspired the Muslim brotherhood, a group reputed to have committed countless terrorist acts towards the Israelis. Hamas is said to have been formed by Sheikh Ahmed Yassin with a sole objective of annihilating the state of Israel and forcing its total withdrawal from the disputed Palestine territory. This is what its charter stipulates. It is credited for having been the mastermind and perpetrator of violence against the Israelis and their interests all over the world, these acts are meted out with impunity only equaled to that of al Qaeda. Together with Al Qaeda, Hamas leads the list of the worst terrorist organizations in the world (James L. Gelvin, 2005). After winning the elections in 2006 and assuming power, it issued a 10 year truce to Israel and vowing to let go temporarily, its suicide missions if the later withdrew from the disputed territories of Gaza, Jerusalem and West bank. This however was not the first truce as again in 2004, it had offered a truce if Israel could totally withdraw from the territories it captured during the Six Days War. This truce however was not held for long as it attacked Israel later in August 2005. Hamas had opted out of the presidential election in 2005 running for the municipal ones where it took control of some important territories. In the parliamentary elections the following year, it was able to garner over 42 percent securing majority seats. Hamas has been accusing Israel of violating the stipulations on the road map that had posited the formation of a Palestinian state, its feud is not limited to Israel only but also to the United States and is ready to wage terrorist attacks against the U.S in 2006 for example, a statement issued by the Hamas officials but later denied, urged the Muslims to target America and its interests all over the world, accusing it of providing financial and logistic support to the Israelis. Hamas officials though, have never owned up to any attack against the United States or to any other country apart from Israel (Lynfield, Ben, December 27, 2004). Its Democratic election into power has thrown a spanner in the works complicating relations with major powers in the world as well as the neighboring countries in the Middle East. Major countries in the western world have always branded Hamas as a terrorist organization. Japan for instance froze all Hamas properties within its jurisdiction in 2005. Jordan has in turn outlawed it due to its terrorist activities. All this animosity is directed to a political and terrorist organization that according to polls conducted in 2007 enjoys over 65% of popular support of Palestinians. The wide public support it has received stems from how it has initiated reforms in morale dilapidated country. It is rooting out massive corruption entrenched in the bureaucracy and order is being restored in the disputed territories. The bloody counter retaliations between the Hamas and Israel however continue, with both sides maintaining their hard stance. With grim prospects for a peaceful co existence, the issue of Hamas leadership in the Palestine state remains a headache for the western countries. Hamas has initiated a number of attacks this year killing a handful and maiming many in the region. It has perfected the art of guerilla warfare employing it tactfully against Israel. It is also accused of executions within its file and rank and also against its key rival, the Fattah. The United States however has been categorical in its stand even in the face of possible political realignments in the Palestine state. One state department spokesman said that the United States still maintains Hamas in its terrorist organizationsââ¬â¢ list. The election has not changed this unless Hamas denounces its atrocious acts (Michael P. Arena, Bruce A. Arrigo, 2006). It is more than apparent that the United States is dismayed by the results but was quick to praise the temporal peaceful coexistence of people in Palestine. It is interesting to note that the Bush administration was non committal of the elections in Palestine as the prospects of Hamas loosing seemed grim. All this however is in the midst of reports in the media that the United States government together with president Mahmoud Abbas had planned to oust the Hamas leadership from the government. This was in an effort to overturn the gains made by Hamas. Hamas has been largely blaming the United States for funding and arming the Fattah combatants in its bid to water down its recent reigns (Tiebel, Amy, 2007). Some nations in Europe are caught between a rock and a hard place. There is a need to legitimize the democratic process that brought Hamas to power but also these countries are wary of an organization that has been labeled a terrorist group. Europe is divided. Berlin and the United Kingdom are adamant that they will have no relations with the Hamas. Russia however on the other hand welcomed Hamas leaders in Moscow, Turkey has also followed suit. Since its formation in 1987, Hamas has grown massively and seems to have stricken a chord with most Palestinians as evidenced in the latest elections. The greatest supporter of Hamas and financial bankroller is Iran. This is its vocal supporter but it has always denied claims of providing finances as alleged by the United States. The coming to power of the Hamas was met with elation from President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran who vowed to back the country financially. The United States claims that Hamas is funded by some Arab countries as well as private businessmen. Most of these countries maintain anti United States stand and are in support of any group that is likely to maintain hostility against Israel. The elevation of Hamas into power legitimizes the relations that Hamas may have had with those countries (Andersen, Mark, 2004). Iran has vowed to commit funds to help the democratically elected government in Palestine. Most of those countries that support Hamas are doing so on the claims of strengthening democracy and seeing it as a solution to the disputes in Middle East. It is obvious that the coming into power of Hamas has complicated the relations that most nations have had with it. Many are in a dilemma on whether to initiate diplomatic contacts with its members or to deal with the president directly. However putting into consideration what Hamas has always stood for, the stand by America and Germany is the way to go, no negotiations of any sort or diplomatic relations should be instituted until Hamas denounces its acts of terrorism and its stand against Israel. The forecasting issues are also identified in this case which helps in declining the performance of the functions carried out by the Woolworths. Proposed solution The proposed solution that can be provided in this case is indicating the benchmarking of services of Woolworths which will provide the benefit by mitigating the issue in the business environment. Other than this, the invitation to the customers must be provided for the purpose of redesigning the service process continued by the Woolworths. This will help it to gain more and more customer attraction and also the complexities can be easily mitigated as the services are concerned in the business environment of Woolworths (Cantoni, 2015). Introduction to e-commerce and m-commerce The discussion regarding the adoption of the e-commerce and the m-commerce of the selected organization is showing that the implementation of this process is depicted to be the traditional process which is being used by the organization. The implementation of this application is depicted to be showing the explanation of the potential opportunities for illustrating the conventional retail business and also the increasing acceptance is being identified in these forms (Saeed and Pejas, 2005). The earliest implementation made the Woolworths generate the opportunities for the development of the work. This is showing the development of the work which is being illustrated by showing the nature of the consumer behaviour and also the pricing and the brand are depicted to be lying in the unclear situation (Wong and Ma, 2013). Organization business benefits in using e-commerce and m-commerce E commerce will help Woolworths to attract more customers. More than 80% of people using internet purchase products and services from online retailers. Thus, it allows the organizations to sale their products and increases their presence to keep up with the competition. The organizations can understand their customer in a better way and also enhance their brand awareness. Thus, it increases the sales and profitability of the organization (Skeldon, 2011). M-commerce has provided a wide platform for the organizations. Software application and smartphones play a significant role in the retail market by developing a relationship with the retailers and customers. It increases convenience for the customers to pay for the services and organizations are able to increase their sales. Woolworths can gain from e commerce and m commerce. Integration of e-commerce and m-commerce to the organization The organization Woolworths should focus on e commerce and m commerce for enhancing their business activities. The use of internet has been increased in the world, and people are using the internet on their smartphones. Thus, it provides a wide opportunity to the organizations to attract a large number of customers through the internet. The business organizations Woolworths have to focus on increasing their online presence and providing services on the smartphones of the customers (Raggad, 2010). Both the technologies can be integrated as people will be able to pay for their services through the internet from their mobile phones. The most effective way is that the organizations should develop mobile applications which will help the customers to purchase and use the services in an appropriate manner. E-commerce supply chain management Introduction Woolworths should convert its supply chain to e commerce supply chain management. The e commerce supply chain helps the organization decide whether the company has the potential to increase their profit margin and provides a wide opportunity (Donk, 2008). The company will be able to achieve fastest production cycles and lowest cost delivery for their products and services which mean efficient supply of raw materials, low distribution costs, and low manufacturing overhead. It also allows maintaining the quality of the products that keep the customers to purchase again and again. The products will be delivered directly to the customers and the needs of the customers will be fulfilled. Sub-processes functions of the E-commerce supply chain management The sub processes of e-commerce supply chain management are as follows: Purchasing and sourcing Capacity planning, operations management, technology solution, material planning and production scheduling Warehouse operation management and distribution planning (Geunes, Pardalos and Romeijn, 2010). Inventory management and outbound and inbound transportation Linking with the sales, promotion, marketing activities and customer service. Challenges and protection Security risks and threats The security risks which are associated with the e-commerce of the selected organization Woolworths is depicted to facing the security issues in the business environment. The breaching of the security in the company networks and the system security controls of the web application are identified to be greatest threats that are faced by the Woolworths. Therefore the security of the web applications is essential for the management of the applications and also the proper system must be installed with proper identification and the authenticating processes included in the system (Laudon and Traver, 2017). Mitigation Techniques The controls must involve the various firewalls, and the anti-virus protection which is essential for the purpose of protecting the system and also the success can be easily achieved in the form of providing security to the environment. Therefore the business growth can be easily depicted by maintaining the safety and the security in the business environment that simply appropriately explains the protection. This also helps in blocking the other security threats faced by the company and also can be able to provide appropriate protection to the business environment (Zschech, Whelan and Mikolajick, 2006). Conclusions The overall discussion is surrounding the identification of the issues of the e-commerce and the m-commerce in the business organization. This is showing the appropriate explanation of the benefits of the e-commerce and the m-commerce with integrating the functions in the business environment. These forms of the information technology are both identified to be developing issues, and the benefits for the business environment and also the protection methods are described in an appropriate way (Quigley, 2005). Therefore the conduct is made in an appropriate way with providing the justification to the facts presented in the report. The management must implement the security measurement for the purpose of mitigating the risks in the business environment of Woolworths References Axelrod, C., Bayuk, J. and Schutzer, D. Primary Mission of Universities free essay sample
In contrast, other people may argue that college and universities should focus on academic material without thinking whether it is useful for the workforce or not. Students, after being employed the company, they have to work in their special field for about one to two years. So they must acquire not only theoretical knowledge but also practical knowledge and skills before graduating from the university. Hence, the main function of the university and college is to either deliver only academics or to prepare the students for future employment had become an argument for many parties like government, college management, employer as well as other scholar. Universities, indeed, teach students a lot of useful information regarding academic subjects but no one can deny that this knowledge is not valuable for their future working purpose. Initially the purpose of the student to get into the university is to acquire sufficient knowledge to find a better job in the future. We will write a custom essay sample on Primary Mission of Universities or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page However, if the universities only deliver academic knowledge such as theory to the student without any practical knowledge, this is not sufficient for the student to grant a better job opportunity in the future. It is necessary or the university and college to provide practical related knowledge to the student. While at the same time the importance of soft skills should not be neglected as well such as communication skill, decision making skill etc. Also the students should be responsible and be thorough in both academic knowledge and practical knowledge. In the dialogue from article of National education association web site (2009), Karen learner was asked that Is the purpose of college to make students employable? She answered Yes, as college instructors, our mission is to increase our students life opportunities. She although mentioned that My mission is to ensure that my students are prepared for the world beyond school. The free ride eventually ends. Being ready for life means getting a good solid education whether it is at a trade school, community college, or university. In school, the students need to learn whole subjects as much as they could from the basic academic matters to advanced practical subjects in special field. In college it is essential for them to be ready to become a qualified person to enter the company before graduating from the university. It is the duty and mission for all the universities to provide appropriate environments to help students to get enough skills. On the contrary, Daniel Rigger answered to the same question that No, higher education must have more of a purpose than making students employable. In addition he pointed out that Since we possess these capacities for a lifetime, the primary purpose of higher education must be to provide a foundation for educating the whole person; it must be geared to develop as fully as possible the whole of a students human potential. Developing workforce skills does not necessarily entail fostering inquiry, reflection, understanding, integration, or creative expression. Consequently, higher education must have more of a purpose than simply making students employable. Many of them appreciated his opinion as his thought seems idealistic. But as per the present world, it is very tough to the new comer who just graduated from college. If the people dont have necessary skill to their job they definitely encounter to the obstacle which need long term hard work to overcome. When asked to Ronald B. Stander(website(DODD)), Why Attend College? , He mentioned that I think the goals of education should be: To prepare students to learn on their own, by reading books and by doing experiments.Anyone with a bachelors degree should be able to teach themselves whatever technical skill(s) they may need. Every student should study not only on the desk but they also should study in another place, such as research laboratories, internships and workplaces. In addition, having technical skills that to be able to teach others are very important to students. If they were not taught the technical skills, its means he or she doesnt understand yet. In other words, they arent employable and are not yet ready to work in any company or organization. Internship is one of the good methods to get job skills before graduating from the university. By the internship work, student can gain real job experience. In Careerisms website, six Reasons Internships Are a Must in College (2012), we can know about useful reasons by doing internships. One of the reasons is Get the Experience Employers Want they describe that There are millions of job seekers nationwide, yet 52% of U. S. Companies report difficulty filling positions.

The effects of Rebellion on Contemporary Music â⬠Music Research Paper
The effects of Rebellion on Contemporary Music ââ¬â Music Research Paper Free Online Research Papers The effects of Rebellion on Contemporary Music Music Research Paper Throughout history, music has perhaps been one of the most influential elements in different cultures and societies. Music has become a universal language in which individuals of all sexes, races and ethnic backgrounds are able to unite and relate with one another through for a common purpose. The ancestry of music is one of the earliest forms of communication that has served as a tool for entertainment as well as holding educational purposes (Pleasants 1955:7). Over time, thousands of different styles and genres have evolved to make up the diverse world of music that is available for different preferences and interests. With this said, it is understandable that there are many different perceptions and interpretations that have a large impact on contemporary music. Each and every one of us has our own preferences for different beats, rhythms and lyrics that are valuable to ourselves however seem distasteful and possibly obnoxious to others. In these following paragraphs we will further examine the concept of rebellion within the musical institution and how it in fact plays a significant role on the evolution of contemporary music. The definition of music is highly variable across different cultures, age groups and audiences. Different sounds and patterns are interpreted and understood in different ways depending on oneââ¬â¢s preferences, interests and choice of individual expression (Brackett 1995:24). These opinions are what motivate composers to continue creating new and innovative rhythms, tempos, tones and styles. The expansion of musical movements has reached great heights in the 1900ââ¬â¢s with the emergence of genres such as Techno in the late 60ââ¬â¢s, Punk Rock in the 1970ââ¬â¢s, and also Reggae (Borthwick Moy 2004:42). Each of these movements has evolved with new ideas, technologies, artists, and audiences. Rebellion is a commonality to all of these different movements and is responsible for the uniqueness of each genre. It is a concept that often is perceived with a negative connotation while in fact it is a form of expression that is used all the time to convey new ideas. The true definition of rebellion is ââ¬Å"An act or a show of defiance toward authority or an established conventionâ⬠(Salzman 1988:8). This description is perhaps why so many people often consider elements of rebellion as being destructive and vicious when in fact rebellion in music is a significant source for innovation. It is depicted through aspects such as fashion, hair styles, drugs, sex, art and politics. Each different period in musical history represents a plethora of new ideas, opinions and attitudes that are expressed through various forms of rebellion that has permitted the emergence and existence of so many brilliant advances in contemporary music. The late 1960ââ¬â¢s was a period in musical history that marks great shifts in political, technological and social norms. This period in history also known as the ââ¬Å"Summer of Loveâ⬠is responsible for the explosion of what is known as Psychedelia (Borthwick Moy 2004:43). During this time, people started breaking free of the traditional attitudes and norms that had existed for so long. This genre is an amalgamation of various components including jazz, folk, RB as well as classical tones (Borthwick Moy 2004:44). The era was full of social reformation and alterations from the mainstream, traditional life. In cities across the world, particularly for the British population who was recovering from repercussions of The Second World War, this was a significant time in which individuals were able to experiment with new music, people and culture. With rising employment levels and the increase in wages, drugs were being integrated for the first time into the social scene at a rapid rate (BorthwickMoy 2004:45). London earned its name ââ¬Å"Swinging Londonâ⬠during this time because of societyââ¬â¢s overall rebellion towards the mainstream moral (Borthwick Moy 2004: 54). Adolescents became more outspoken, open- minded and eager to adopt different attitudes. The former fashion was now being replaced with different hair styles, costumes and general clothing that fit the psychedelic scene. Bright colors, fabrics and patterns that accentuated the unique aura of this period were prevalent among both the artists and the audience (Borthwick Moy 2004:54). The Psychedlic phase lasted only a few years, and yet the impact on contemporary music is apparent in many forms presently. The studio effects and instrumental achievements that resulted from this period are still used by composers today. Recording elements such as ADT, phasing and fuzztone are all products of this time and are still incorporated in the production of a variety of music (Borthwick Moy 2004: 57). More than just the audible and physical elements of the psychedelic era are apparent in cultures across the world today. The attitudes regarding politics and alternative lifestyle are still very much prevalent in our society (Brackett 1995:26). Punk Rock is another movement that is has had a great impact on contemporary music. Punk or ââ¬Ëgarageââ¬â¢ flourished in the 1970ââ¬â¢s and grew tremendously within just a few months (Borthwick Moy 2004:79). Punk is identified by its loud noise, rhythm, intensity and often times violent tones (Salzman1988: 201). It originated as a reaction to political issues of the time, and an overall frustration to the post war concerns especially in the UK (Borthwick Moy 2004:78). Through the music, adolescents were able to overtly verbalize their discouragement and aggravations with the social and economic troubles that had transpired during this time. The lyrics of Punk were often controversial and addressed contentious matters within society. Bands such as Sex Pistolsââ¬â¢ and Buzzcocksââ¬â¢ were renowned for their radical lyrics and extreme undertones (Borthwick Moy 2004: 81). The developing Punk community thrived on their freedom, autonomy and individuality. The fashion that was adopted by this community was everything but conventional and was another way for this culture to suggest their independence. Articles of clothing displaying swastikas and often offensive slogans were standard modes for voicing passionate opinions and attitudes. Fifties sunglasses, leather jackets, and an overall ââ¬Ëgrungeââ¬â¢ look was a universal way for the Punk community to support the tough reputation that they ascertained (Borthwick Moy 2004: 83). The degree of rebellion throughout the Punk society was a bit more profound than that of other music styles throughout history. The intensity and passion that is rooted in this movement has been recognized and admired for its impact on contemporary music (Brackett 1995:25) . The philosophy behind punk has been incorporated into other styles of music such as rap and techno (Borthwick Moy 2004:92). The emphasis on limited resources and simplicity that is grounded in Punk Rock has also been incorporated in new developments such as New Wave, Goth, Oi!, and Anarcho-punk. Even though the concept of this genre originated years ago, its influence over punk bands and punk rock can be seen in many different aspects of the culture today. The late 1960ââ¬â¢s is also a benchmark for yet another great advancement in music. Reggae, also known as ââ¬ËRootsââ¬â¢ is a rhythmic form of Jamaican music which incorporates various elements from Africa and Europe (Borthwick Moy 2004:99). The lyrics found in this style are greatly reflective of Rastafarianism and accentuates Jamaicaââ¬â¢s political and cultural independence from the United States and Europe (Borthwick Moy 2004:108). While the context of Reggae was extremely significant for the African community and exposed strong emotional reflections of monumental events such as slavery, the lyrics were more peaceful and largely focused on anti- violence. With the deterioration of the sugar and banana markets, Jamaica began falling into a period of economic disaster (Borthwick Moy 2004:109). As a reaction to these harsh times, the society turned to music for emotional relief. Afro-centrism and communality became the focal point for the general morale of the Ra stafarian community at this time. Over the years, the influence of Roots spread and encouraged the emergence of subunits such as Loverââ¬â¢s Rock, Dub, Rockerââ¬â¢s and The British Style (Borthwick Moy 2004:110). Style was another aspect of Reggae that was unique to the Rastafarian culture. The visual elements of this period were a large part of the communal atmosphere that played such a significant role in the industry. Images, colors and drawings are very popular forms of representation that are incorporated in almost all artifacts relating to this genre (Everything 2005). The outline of Africa is often times depicted on albums as with the red, green and gold colors of the African Flag. Dreadlocks, wigs, big jewelry, and flashy clothing are all part of the attire that represents the Reggae movement (Borthwick Moy 2004:108). In contrast to some other genres, this unique style of this period never truly faded. The 1990ââ¬â¢s sparked a revival in Reggae production after the death of Bob Marley in 1981 (Everything 2005). The influence of both the music as well as the aesthetic elements is still apparent across different cultures today. Popular artists still incorporate elements of Jamai can Rap and dancehall into influential contemporary music (Borthwick Moy 2004:111). The world of music has been changing, evolving and improving ever since the first note was played. It has become a second language for so many people in which social, cultural and political contexts are shared, interpreted and revolutionized through passing generations. With every new artist, song, lyric and beat that is created, we unknowingly open so many doors for further improvements. Accentuating differences and diversity is essential to the further development of influential music. Rebellion in a sense is another form of constructive criticism when it is applied and interpreted in the appropriate manner. It has played a significant role in the progression of ideas, concepts, styles, technologies and so many other elements critical to contemporary music. Rebellion is a freedom that has proven to have profound benefits on the progression of the musical industry. It is imperative for the advancement of music all together, that individuals take the initiative to raise questions ag ainst tradition, and challenge mainstream society. Borthwick Moy (2004). New Concept evaluation with planning & execution proposals Essay
New Concept evaluation with planning & execution proposals - Essay Example As Griffinââ¬â¢s model above indicates, the addition of a new product line is the riskiest venture that a company can undertake so careful planning and execution is required to avoid negative cost and schedule variances. In addition, dehumidifiers are already market available so consumer perspectives need to be taken into account to deal with concerns with existing competition. The customer will be treated as a co-creator for the current project as explained by Nambisan (2002). In order to pursue product development for the proposed dehumidifier, a gate stage model will be used to plan various stages and oversee their productive gains from concept to final market product. This report will discuss the various phases, their gated formations and checks available to ensure a smooth product development process for the proposed dehumidifier. The stage-gate (alternatively phase-gate) technique is utilised in project management when dealing with new product development. Product development processes are broken down into various phases that are limited by the presence of gates. Each phase has its own sets of objectives to achieve. Once these objectives are achieved, the selected gatekeepers review the progress and decide if the project is to be moved into the next stage or if it is to be revised or rejected altogether. The iterative character of the entire process ensures that risks are minimised, contingencies are adapted for and that the project remains as market relevant as possible (Chao et al., 2005). The zero phase is intended to allow for project management planning through the confluence of different departments that would need to corroborate for product development. This phase also known as ââ¬Å"fuzzy front endâ⬠is aimed to solicit ideas from various team members in order to decide if the idea is workable in the given circumstance and to

The Philosophy of Crime Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
The Philosophy of Crime - Essay Example It is committed because the scene has led to believe that the act is just and proper for the conclusion of a movement and silent event saturation in the irreversible process of mental, religious, and lawful check and balance. In the parameters of readers influence, thrillers and killer novels have a lot of drawbacks in the creation of ways and means and a network of scenes for fun and diversion. It is a reliable view to a kill for its sentiments and results were made through intensive imagination and research, what they are going to do is just to get on with the act and experience the fun and the rush. This paper will discuss first the factors that lead to the commission of the act to be able to understand more the reason for such environment and doer solidarity in a very abnormal state of philosophy and psychology. Approximations of rage. Rage so we say emotes intense anger experience through disappointments and failures that one loses grip of reality and norms of reasoning that results to uncontrollable expression through violent reactions. Rage is the perfect disguise for the commission of crime where a person relates the act to justified symmetry of evasively powerful reasoning. The variations of his adrenaline rush give him the feeling of great physical strength at accelerated brain processing information. Entering an intense state of focus in a dilated state to the source of their anger caused by a long term stress, a person can very well lose sight of what is proper and tend to move to act of what is justifiable at the moment of solitude and indecisiveness. This is the only emotion when a person can do almost everything to satiate grievances and hang ups that allow unplanned activity and unwisely impulsive behavior. Most of the crimes that happens were from the paraphernalia of adrenalin e rush and unplanned activity of rage level. Rage often lead people to impossible acts like its sole counterpart love where people do more than what is possible to omit loss and save lives or relationships. An ounce of love suppresses an ounce of rage as I may take it from the previous statement. So maybe a prevention of rage could be a medication of love where the unaccepted could be accepted and the unloved could be love. Environmental adaptation. Somehow our environment and high technology updates qualify the commission of crime to omission of incidental resources on selective war games software programming. Rather than finding ways to annihilate computer rage that destroys millions of children brain and school performance, software developers are just finding low cost economical means of taking out frustrations in computers. Psychologically determined damaging movies and thrillers must not be shown to children and the youth of today who are easily impress on a lot of things other than bargaining to obtain the rush of what was portrayed or hoping to do their own original act at their own original setting which resulted to actual mass murders in schools and at home. Unwise manifestations of parents and adult in their expressions of anger and personal squabbles witnessed by children may prove vital to the reenactment in their future lives as the inclination to rage was passed down. Environment and peo ple has a lot to do with the development of frustrations and rage. Crime is not perfect in

Everyman Must Have Been An Awesome Tool Religion Essay
Everyman Must Have Been An Awesome Tool Religion Essay The play Everyman must have been an awesome tool for witnessing to the churched and unchurched alike during medieval times. There were dramatic performances during spring and winter festivals in most countries during this period in history. This approach to drama helped to shape what came to be called the drama of the church. This form of public worship called liturgical services was most popular around Easter and Christmas. In the medieval society, there were many things to keep people preoccupied to the point where they did not focus on the salvation of their souls. In lines 74 through 82 Death describes some of these things, he says à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦Everyman will I beset that liveth beastly Out of Gods laws, and dreadeth not folly. He that loveth riches I will strike with my dart, His sight to blind, and from heaven to depart-Except that Almsdeeds be his good friend-In hell for to dwell, world without end. Lo, yonder I see Everyman walking: Full little he thinketh on my coming; His mind is on fleshly lusts and his treasure,à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦ Everyman depicts the inevitable as the reading suggests, facing death and coming to terms with life. The character Everyman is confronted with his present condition of sin and is about to be judged. In lines 103 through 110 Death tells him, On thee thou must take a long journay: Therefore thy book of count with thee thou bring, For turn again thou cannot by no way. And look thou be sure of thy reckoning, For before God thou shalt answer and shew Thy many bad deeds and good but a few-How thou hast spent thy life and in what wise, Before the Chief Lord of Paradise. Everyman thinks that he can put off Death until he is ready by giving him money and asking Death to be kind, which is ironic. In lines 120 through 125 Everyman states, O Death, thou comest when I had thee least in mind. In thy power it lieth me to save: Yet of my good will I will give thee, If thou will be kind, Yea, a thousand pound shalt thou have-And defer this matter till another day. Now faced with death you would think that Everymans main focus would be his salvation, but instead he thinks that Fellowship, Kindred, Cousin, Goods, and Good Deeds can go with him to help him to plead his case. Only Good Deeds was able to point him in the right direction towards Knowledge, who was the only one who could go with him at first. In lines 486 through 488 Good Deeds states, Here I lie, cold in the ground: Thy sins hath me sore bound That I cannot stear-(stir or move). After Good Deeds introduced Everyman to Knowledge, he was finally headed in the right direction. Knowledge said to him, Everyman, I will go with thee and be thy guide, In thy most need to go by thy side. The lessons in plays such as Everyman were intended by the church to educate and steer medieval Christians in the right direction toward the salvation of their souls. This was important in their lives because of their belief that the salvation of the medieval Christians soul is achieved only through the church. Also important were the seven sacraments-key spiritual events in the life of medieval Christians. Knowledge leads Everyman to Confession so that he could ask for mercy, to be cleansed, and receive his Good Deeds. Everyman prayed for the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation saying, in lines 544 through 553, O glorious fountain that all uncleanness doth clarify, Wash from me the spots of vice unclean, that on me no sin may be seen. I come with Knowledge for my redemption, Redempt with heart and full contrition, For I am commanded a pilgrimage to take An great accounts before God to make. Now I pray you, Shrift, mother of salvation, Help my Good Deeds for my piteous exclamation. Next, in lines 581 through 608, Everyman prayed for the sacraments of Penitence-admitting guilt and sorrow for his sins and also for Penance-the punishment for his sins. He also prayed for Eucharist, which is Holy Communion, Holy Orders and Marriage. After this prayer Good Deeds returned to be with him to go w ith him and help him declare his good works. Now with Everyman on his journey is Knowledge, Good Deeds, Discretion, Strength, Beauty, and Five-Wits. Knowledge tells Everyman about the sacrament of Extreme Unction in lines 706 through 711, Everyman, hearken what I say: Go to Preisthood, I you advise, And receive of him, in any wise, The holy sacrament and ointment together; Then shortly see ye turn again hither: We will all abide you here. After this Five-wits tells him about the importance of the priesthood. In lines 712 through 727 he says to everyman, Yea, Everyman, hie you that ye ready were. There is no emperor, king, duke, ne baron, That of God hath commission As hath the least priest in the world being: For of the blessed sacraments pure and bening He beareth the keys, and thereof hath the cure For mans redemption-it is ever sure-Which God for our souls medicine Gave us out of his heart with great pine, Here is this transitory life for thee and me. The blessed sacraments seven there be: Baptism, confirmation, with priesthood good, And the sacrament of Gods precious flesh and blood, Marriage, the holy extreme unction, and penance: These seven be good to have in remembrance, Gracious sacraments of high divinity. In the society of the medieval Christian it is the priest who dispenses the seven holy sacraments of the Christian life. The final act ends with everyone leaving Everyman except Good Deeds and Knowledge, who stayed with him until the end. Everyman gives a final warning for everyone to learn from his mistakes in lines 864 through 869, he says, Methink, alas, that I must be gone To make my reckoning and my debts pay, For I see my time is nigh spent away. Take example, all ye that this do hear or see, How they that I best loved do forsake me, Except my Good Deeds that bideth truly. This ending was definitely one that the medieval Christian church wanted everyone in this society to understand and it is, that you can not take anyone or anything with you even if it is buried with your body, you will stand alone before God to be judged and things as well as other people will be of no use to you. They stressed the importance of being a part of the church and doing good works and living according to the seven holy sacraments so that your good works would not be in vein.

A Mp3 is an individual song converted into a digital format and playable on computers. à à à à à A popular program easily accessible on the Internet is called Napster. After you download it from Napsterââ¬â¢s site, you basically tell it where you keep your Mp3 files and when it connects it cross-references everyoneââ¬â¢s files and lets you search through them all and download as you please. 90% of the files that are traded daily are illegally ââ¬Å"rippedâ⬠from CDs. Napster has a blurb at startup that states ââ¬Å"Copying or distributing unauthorized Mp3 files may violate United States and/or foreign copyright laws. Compliance with copyright law remains your responsibility.â⬠The RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) is charging the site with copyright infringement and alleges that Napster has created a base for music piracy on an unprecedented scale. Napster contends that they provide the platform, not the actions, and that as the blurb states itââ¬â¢s up to the people. Napster is not at fault because the RIAA has overstepped their boundaries and infringed on first amendment rights online. à à à à à Should the owner of the gun shop be charged with murder if a man he sold a gun to decides to shoot another man in cold blood? Of course not, if the shop owner followed all of the laws that govern him. Should the car dealership be charged with vehicular felonies every time one of their vehicles is involved in a crime? Certainly not. So why should softwareââ¬â¢s originator be responsible for what their software is used for? They shouldnââ¬â¢t, but the only reason the RIAA is jumping all over the Napster community is that they canââ¬â¢t just go out and arrest everybody who decides to trade Mp3s online. à à à à à The real people that the RIAA should crack down on are the people who use the rippers. A ripper is a computer program used to convert (rip) a musical track off of a CD and into a Mp3. They can be found on public shareware sites fairly simply with a search engine. The problem here is that the public in general uses them and can download them just like any other software.

Comparative Study of Visible Light Spectra Emitted
One discrepancy is that according to the table above, LED must be the most saturated, this is not the case for the experiment, however, due to the age of the device and its degenerated bulbs one of the major faults of first generation LED displays Another part of the objectives of the study was to compare the light spectra with respect to different colors as well as brightness the group initially tried altering the intensity Of the light sources to see if changing the intensity would cause a significant difference in the observations. The only difference found by increasing (or decreasing) the light intensity was that the visible light spectrum was brighter (or dimmer). No other characteristic of the visible light spectrum changes. 4. Conclusion Given the characteristics based on the grabs standard, it is apparent that the monitor with the most accurate color reproduction is the PIPS screen followed by the LED and lastly the Retina. Color reproduction can be concluded to be directly r elated to the width of the white light spectra produced by the screens; the wider the spectra the more accurate the color reproduction. TheLED not matching the literature for having the most saturated display of color is because of the degenerated bulbs that is a common problem for first generation LED screens. The resolution, on the other hand, did not seem to affect the visible light spectra. Comparing the light spectra with different brightness does not vary the results; it only contributes to the brightness or dimness of the spectra. In future experiments, some of the improvements considered are finding a more standardized color application, using a more advanced spectrometer, and comparing newer devices.

A Very Short Introduction By Jonathan Culler - 1279 Words
In Literary Criticism A Very Short Introduction, author Jonathan Culler writes on feminist theory: on the one hand, feminist theorists champion the identity of women, demand rights for women, and promote womenââ¬â¢s writings as representations of the experience of women. On the other hand, feminists undertake a theoretical critique of the heterosexual matrix that organizes identities and cultures in terms of the opposition between man and woman (Culler 140). These two approaches, championing and critiquing can be found in both the works of Jane Austen and E.M. Forster. In their novels, we welcome a central female character who flourishes into their own understanding of the word, and provides their own literary voice to an overwhelminglyâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Rather, Lucyââ¬â¢s character is merely that, her own, a full embodiment of herself, and ultimately this is the major revelation she transcends to through her journey in Forsterââ¬â¢s novel. Whereas Elizabeth seeks to prove a point of equality, Lucy seeks to embody that point. This does not discount Elizabethââ¬â¢s progressiveness, but rather is central to how these two characters embody a continuum of feminismââ¬â¢s development. Both Elizabeth and Lucy exhibit strong determination, but contexts shape them differently. In the world of victorian England, Elizabeth Bennett rejects the man she is destined to love because he outwardly does not met the decorum of socie ty and slights her with his mannerism. In a similar way, Lucy holds to her own private prejudices in her rejection of George Emerson. But George Emerson is a far cry from Mr. Darcy; George being someone who has grown up equalizing women whereas Darcy has grown up believing they have a place. Therefore, for Lucy, expectations are different because the shift in gender equality is already well underway. Throughout the novel bread crumbs are dropped for Lucy about her own potential, whereas for the females of Austenââ¬â¢s Longbourn, marriage is their only opportunity, their lone certain way to escape. Even Elizabeth Bennett cannot escape this reality. In A Room with A View the female characterââ¬â¢s autonomy is placed front in center. Furthermore, femininity itself is burgeoning out of evenShow MoreRelatedEssay on Evolution and Ambiguous Communication766 Words à |à 4 Pagescould come right out and say it more precisely in a nice block of prose? This inherent ambiguity of poetry is best expressed by Culler in Literary Theory: If you take the sentence as a poem, the question isnt quite the same: not what does the speaker or author mean but what does the poem mean? How does this language work? What does this sentence do? (24) Here Culler points out an interesting decentralization of original meaning.
